EXHIBITION SYNOPSIS:
Maps form the basis to much of Edward Woodley’s work in his current exhibition but, in many ways, each work can be viewed as a multi-layered map of Woodley’s own world and creative process. Each comprises a box made by the artist, often from salvaged timber; an extension of the sculptural side of his practice. Then, there are literally the maps – an indication of the journeys Woodley has taken or the journeys he wants to go on – but rotated, obscured or otherwise concealed to become entirely new destinations in his hands. He paints over those maps with fragments of bold lettering – memories of street signage he has come across in his travels both here and overseas. It may be the makeshift quality of the original sign that inspires, the combination of colours in it, the space between the letters, or the (not necessarily English) letters themselves. The message is not important. In fact, as in the maps, he goes to great lengths to camouflage any literal meaning; instead focusing on textures and forms.
As well as using maps as an underlay for his fragmentary lettering, Woodley also works with old metal signage he has collected – again, concentrating on the patterns and forms of the signs rather than what they stand for, and highlighting their imperfections, their degradation over time.
Over the top of each work lies a gleaming coat of resin which serves not only to meld its various parts into a single whole but also accentuates Woodley’s celebration of the beauty in the everyday, in elements the rest of us take for granted.

CHINA HEIGHTS PRESENT: 18/1/08 @ OXFORD ART FACTORY
This Friday night, China Heights presents a night of swamp/psyche/punk rock, at Oxford Art Factory.

First up is Sydney’s crowd pleasing ‘Atrocities’. A younger band that delivers a psyche/folk rock sound, that draw influence from the likes of the Velvet Underground, Joy Division and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Next up is Melbourne’s all-star band ‘Sailors & Swine’. If you like the sounds of the Captain Beefheart, to the Birthday Party, you’ll love this grimy 4-piece. Quoted as “the sexiest thing ever, like Bryan Ferry Crossed with Sonic Youth, only better…”, all will be satisfied.

To headline the event is Sydney’s ever entertaining, always notorious ‘the Disbelievers’. A black clad 4-piece, that can be best described as Johnny Cash fronting the Cramps, whilst listening to 60’s punk rock down on the big bayou. For mid show entertainment, Dj’s Oldboy (aka Winged Eel), and Ironman will play their unique blend of 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s punky garage party noise.

To proceed the headline events; the night will be carried away, and taken to a healthier place by the technical wizardry of the party duo ‘Mike Tyson’.

Door charge $10. Show starts at 9pm to late. Friday 18.01.08. Oxford Art Factory, 38-46 Oxford St, Darlo.
